Inspired by the project Haringkoppen Verbinden for the city of Vlaardingen the Foundation Haringkoppen Verbinden has come to life.
This Foundation wishes strongly to connect people to people, people to cities, cities to other cities etc. Maybe if we start small, it will keep on growing and become a worldwide happening especially through art.
Over the period of a year instigated in cooperation with Jos Lukassen this idea has grown to become a 4 meter high bronze herring sculpture, which will be created working side by side with the art foundry Atelier 80. At the moment we are in the process of selecting a fitting location for the sculpture, also the technical drawings and have already started the creation of the scales in the foundry.
Scales you say?
The open framework of this sculpture already resembles the scales of a fish, however over time these open spaces will be filled in with 456 custom made, cast bronze scales, that will be clicked into place. People who donate a certain amount of funds into the Foundation will as thanks have a token scale placed in the sculpture in their name. They are also free to choose their own inscription which will be hand engraved and then placed. The bronze scales will be combined with a fully welded padlock and key. There is also a more costly additional option of choosing a custom color for a high glossy spray-chrome or plain coat finish by the company BChromed.
Before the large sculpture, the wish of Jos Lukassen the initiator of Haringkoppen Verbinden to connect people with their city as well as each other, gave birth to a symbolic herring made of gypsum by my hand.
If your mindset is “everybody an artist” then anyone and everyone can decorate this blank canvas as they please. Hopefully they will afterwards donate their artwork towards the creation of another piece of art. These individual herring will become an ever larger school of colorful herring, not only to help promote the city of Vlaardingen and it’s colorful residents, but could, and is already making connections with participators all over the world, whilst simultaneously trying to creat a feeling of unity with people, cities and countries as a whole.
